Things to Know About Infant Care
Caring for an infant is both rewarding and challenging. During the first few months of life, babies rely entirely on caregivers for their needs. Understanding the basics of infant care can help ensure your baby grows healthy and strong. Feeding
Infants typically need to be fed every 2–3 hours, whether breastfed or formula-fed. Breast milk is ideal as it contains antibodies and nutrients vital for growth and immunity. If breastfeeding isn’t an option, infant formula provides necessary nutrition. Watch for hunger cues such as lip smacking or rooting.
Sleeping
Newborns sleep about 14–17 hours a day, usually in short intervals. Always place your baby on their back to sleep, on a firm mattress with no loose bedding or toys, to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Diapering and Hygiene
Babies may need 8–12 diaper changes a day. Keep the diaper area clean and dry to prevent rashes. Bathe your baby 2–3 times a week with warm water and gentle soap. Sponge baths are best until the umbilical cord falls off.
Comfort and Bonding
Hold your baby often to provide comfort and security. Skin-to-skin contact helps with bonding and stabilizes the baby’s body temperature and heart rate. Responding to cries builds trust and supports emotional development.
Health and Safety
Attend all well-baby checkups and vaccinations. Monitor for signs of illness such as fever, unusual fussiness, or feeding difficulties. Make sure the baby’s environment is safe—no small objects, choking hazards, or unsafe sleeping conditions.
Development
Talk, sing, and make eye contact with your baby to support language and cognitive development. Give them supervised tummy time daily to strengthen neck and shoulder muscles.
